Today we had 2 shortish flights to get us to the island country of Cyprus!
Our original plan was to go to Turkey during this time, but instead we decided to get really close to it! Besides being located right underneath Turkey, Cyprus is half governed by Turkey and half by it’s own government which is mostly Greek. Ever since Cyprus was divided up in 1974, there has needed to be a UN buffer zone between the two sides. The area in the buffer zone is mostly home to wildlife, but there is one small village in it where Greek and Turkish Cypriots live together peacefully. According to the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, there are over 1,000 “incidents” every year on the border between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots!
Another reason we chose Cyprus is because we were able to get a crazy deal ($100 per night, 1/5 of the regular price!) on an all inclusive hotel! It is significantly more than we usually spend, but since all of our food and drinks are included, it seemed too good to be true! We thought it would be the perfect opportunity to stop and do absolutely nothing for a few days.
The first things we noticed when we checked in this evening, was that everyone speaks English (most of the guests are from the UK), and they have Christmas decorations and music!
