We then did a loop around some of the popular streets in town. We headed to the Royal Palace and were lucky enough to see their changing of the guard!

We then headed up the main shopping street to look for a skirt I could wear to Morocco. We were able to find one along the way!

We also stopped and looked around in a couple squares we found. One of them had the Apple store, so of course Alexander checked it out!

We then had a very late lunch of tapas!

After enjoying the sunshine and some street performers’ music, we headed back to our AirBnB for the evening!

Day 73- Parque de el Retiro

Today we spent most of our time at the Parque del el Retiro, a park in the middle of Madrid. It’s very large and has a variety of things to see.

We enjoyed walking through the fall trees even though it doesn’t feel like fall! The high today is 85 degrees!

Eventually through the trees we came across the Crystal Palace- a building with windows all the way around.

Outside the Palace, there were vendors selling souvenirs, a fountain, and small groups of people playing music. I really enjoyed the atmosphere!

So far in Madrid and Barcelona, we have decided that they really really like their fountains- there are just so many of them! This park was of course no exception!

We found a little lake next to the Monumento Alfonso XII. It had a bunch of little row boats that people can rent and row around the lake!

We of course totally had to do it too! It was only 6 Euros to stay out for basically as long as you like, so why not? We got to say hi to some ducks and turtles in the water.

Near the lake, we stopped for smoothies and a light lunch. We were also surrounded by the beautiful fall leaves! For a little bit, despite the heat, it felt a little like home!

We then continued through the park and headed towards the main art/museum road. We passed to Puerta de Alcala. It is the first modern (post-Roman) triumph arch in Europe- older than the ones in Paris and Berlin!

We also passed the Palacio de Cibeles (Cybele Palcace). It is the seat of the City Council of Madrid! You can see in the photo, the palace has a large sign that says “REFUGEES WELCOME”.

Lastly, we came across the Museo Nacional del Prado (the National Museum). We didn’t go in- we are currently on a hiatus from museums! We have seen enough of them to last us a while!

We then came home and had a late dinner- our food schedule is definitely more European!
